| Outcomes: Students gain an understanding of how micro-organisms (especially bacteria and viruses) cause disease. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria and viruses, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. |

| Content: This unit assumes completion of MICR2204 Introductory Microbiology (formerly 950.204 Introductory Microbiology 204) and deals with the theme 'bad bugs–good bugs'. The unit begins with an introduction to the immune response and the nature of viral and bacterial infections. Disorders of the immune system, laboratory tests for infection and vaccines in current use are discussed. This is followed by an introduction to genetics. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. The unit is one of the prerequisites for a major in Microbiology. |

| Assessment: This comprises an examination (60 per cent), continuous assessment (10 per cent), a case study (15 per cent) and a laboratory practical examination (15 per cent). |
